The Best Dance Movies on Netflix

We don’t know about you, but here at TLC Dancewear, we love a dance movie.

Over the years there have been so many great films from the dance genre, from fictional hits to recorded performances of real-life shows.

In fact, the very first dance film that was shown to an audience was a Swan Lake ballet in 1895. A projector was used to display the classic performance to audience members in the Russian city of St. Petersburg.

These days, there are a whole host of excellent dance films readily available thanks to streaming services like Netflix.

Let’s take a look at some of the best options Netflix has to offer.

Yeh Ballet (2020)

This Netflix original film follows the journey of two Indian teenagers as they pursue their dream of becoming professional dancers. Assisted by an eccentric dance teacher, the pair come up against a whole host of challenges, including disapproval and prejudice from others who believe that dance is no way to make a living.

This beautiful film features some truly breathtaking routines, and Netflix’s handy subtitles mean that despite its original language being Hindi, everyone can enjoy the captivating on-screen performances.

Step Sisters (2018)

A comedy dance film set in modern-day America, this hit Netflix movie places black sorority president Jamilah (Megalyn Echikunwoke) centre stage.

After her university’s reputation is left in tatters by a group of sorority girls who are more focused on partying than making a good impression, Jamilah takes it upon herself to teach her classmates the art of Greek step dance.

With plenty of laughs along the way,  this film is a great watch if you’re looking for something that has plenty of heart and great dance routines.

Step Up (2006)

Perhaps one of the most successful dance films of all time due to the critical and commercial reception it received, Step Up spawned four sequels and a legion of loyal fans.

It places Channing Tatum’s character, Tyler Gage, at the heart of the action. Based in an underprivileged neighbourhood in Baltimore, Tyler looks to lift himself out of poverty by pursuing his love of dance.

He’s paired with Nora Clark (Jenna Dewan), a modern dancer from the complete opposite background. From initially butting heads to eventually working together to create stunning routines, this is a classic of the genre that can be enjoyed time and time again.

Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker (2020)

A documentary dance film, Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker goes behind the scenes as legendary dance teacher Debbie Allen prepares her dance school’s annual Nutcracker show.

Allen is a true dance icon who has choreographed some of the greatest routines in dance history. This film gives a fascinating insight into her process, providing viewers with a unique insight into this Golden Globe-winning star.

Faith, Hope & Love (2019)

Recently divorced Faith (Peta Murgatroyd) is at her lowest ebb. As well as finding her love life in tatters, she also faces losing her beloved dance studio. The only hope of saving her business is to win a dance show, and she is paired with Jimmy (Robert Krantz) to try and do exactly that.
